Dr Maria Tulino

Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS)

Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)

Since 2008 I have been delivering psychological therapies for the adult inpatients and outpatients with respiratory and/or oncological diseases (West London NHS Trust and Barts Health NHS Trust), adult patients population suffering from anxiety and depression in Primary Care (South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and IAPT service), female prisoners at HMP Send (Surrey) and the general population in a charitable counselling service in Hackney, London.

I currently work for Barts Health NHS Trust as a Senior Psychologist in The Psychology Service for Oncology

& Palliative Care and I provide assessment and direct interventions to both in and outpatients, family members and carers.

As a therapist, I see myself as a companion on a journey, a fellow traveller that has to struggle with the same issues of meaninglessness, death anxiety and isolation. I do not provide magic solutions but I rather provide

a safe and confidential space where is possible to experience a genuine and authentic relationship with somebody that is not judgmental, does not give advice but rather helps you exploring and finding your own direction in life.

Working according to the existential-phenomenological model, I refrain from pathologising clients and instead I work with the individual towards understanding the meaning of their distressing symptoms. I view emotions, including the painful ones, as signals, messages that can help us progressing towards personal growth and change. Experiencing these unpleasant feelings might open up the door to positive experiences of growth and self-discovery.

The work I do with clients aims at exploring the messages that their emotions bring, enhancing the individuals’ self-awareness, self-understanding and self-acceptance and enabling them to live with their feelings and make choices in accordance with their authentic wishes and needs.
